how to make a mountain out of a mole hill

Amateur surveyors just reclassified a hill as a mountain by finding it’s true height was over the 2000 ft limit for the new name– but only by half-a-foot.

“It’s fantastic. Nothing like this had happened before,” said Mr Phillips, from Welshpool, Powys. “We’re very pleased our survey has proved Mynydd Graig Goch is a mountain and not a hill.” (BBC story)

Hate to ruin their fun, but the margin of error was reported to be 9.8 ft, which is within the bounds of the previous measure. I think even Nevile Maskelyne cound have done that.

  1. I bet you someone is up there late at night adding wheelbarrow loads of dirt and planting some shrubbery to get that extra 1/2 foot.

  2. what are they measuring it with? twine and tape? 9.8ft is a fairly large margarine of error….
